Lots of cities are becoming involved and seeing the effects of urban developments and are requiring that green landscaping be part of new construction projects. From green roofs to trees, other plants and water features, the appearance of most cities is changing. But the green movement isn’t just for cities. A lot of individuals are looking for ideas for their own green landscape designs and gardens.

What exactly is a green sustainable landscape? It should be an attractive environment that is in tune with its sorroundings and requires minimal resources such as fertilizer, pesticides, water, and other resources. Sustainable landscapes and gardens start with a good design that includes functional, cost efficient, visually appealing, and environmentally friendly areas.

As you start to plan your green landscaping, consider the view you want to see from inside your home and how your home will fit in with your landscape design. Landscaping ideas based on natural surroundings can save money and reduce maintenance costs as well. And an attractive Landscaping plan will most always improve your outdoor space.

Green gardeners and landscape designers know that it starts in the soil and that better soil means healthier plants. also, the more lawn your yard has, the more water you’ll use. So it’s a good idea for green landscape design to cut down on turf grass area.

A few other considerations can help make your landscaping even greener by doing more than one function. Since not all soil is the same or even any good, you may need to work on yours. Try making your own by compost. You can either buy a composter, build your own composting machine, or even buy already made compost material. Till or spade compost into
your existing garden soil, where it will help it hold moisture, add microorganisms that turn into fertilizer, and provide nutrients that help the roots and elements to work together.

Choose plants according to acidity or alkalinity, the amount of light requirements, and the amount of water it will require. The less you need, the better. Choose all types of woody plants and trees, hedges and ground covers, annual and perennial
flowers, ornamental grasses, wildflowers, and bulbs. Talk to your county extension agent or someone at a local plant store to help you pick out some native plants. Most of them are very attractive as well as have the advantage of not being subject to diseases and pests.

Use drip or flood bubblers where you can for watering. Spray systems can lose a lot of water to evaporation and wind. Drip irrigation uses less water and puts it right where you want it.

Take advantage of natural resources when possible. Put a rain barrel under the spout and cover it after the rain has fallen. Use it for the whole yard and landscape. And instead of going with all decorative or flowering plants, do some edible landscape design by addingsome berries, fruit trees and even vegetables to the landscaping. As you plant, keep in mind that there are others who might want to use your yard and include some plants to provide resources for wildlife.

If it is done correctly, decorative concrete can be especially beautiful which explains why a great number of property owners and firms are choosing it to improve their outdoor areas and homes. From a cobblestone entryway to a stone patio, the feel of patterned cement is not just genuine but it also has the long term hardness associated with cement. If done right, stenciled concrete carried out on any space around the property or enterprise is going to increase the home value and also impress lots of other folks.

Concrete is durable, functional, and is no longer only in plain old gray. Designed concrete allows the creativeness of cement contractors to go absolutely free in order to develop interesting design ideas. Decorative cement colors can be added together to develop a lot of colour shades and strength with new or perhaps old concrete areas. With stamped cement, it is easy to get the general look of natural stone with the ruggedness and cost-effectiveness that goes with concrete.

Whether your ultimate goal would be to copy or even do custom work, decorated stamped cement is going to be best suited method for decorating concrete. Best defined as stamping or forcing a pattern or design onto recently poured concrete creating a pattern that soon gets hard. Decorative concrete stamping can make drives, courtyards and pathways which mimic pavers, all-natural flag stone, cobblestones and even high-priced porcelain tile for a small percentage of regular cost. Stamps can be bought in an amazing array of unique designs and measurements, that can totally change the overall look of your concrete area, or simply to incorporate some accents.

A nice thing about stamped concrete might be the fact that it’s a possibility on hilly areas and uneven soil. Decorative concrete stamping can be done with vertical as well as horizontally materials. Decorative concrete ideas have a bunch of personal and retail uses. Several homes use concrete stamping for internal floors where they even can be made to look exactly like wood. Along with that, it also adds a completed touch to any kind of landscaping projects.

If made the right way, stamped concrete is going to be more solid and way more longer lasting than regular concrete, and covers the identical construction needs as every day concrete. Architecturally made stamped concrete will be many times stronger than brick pavers and various other flooring options. Stamped concrete is not just a preferred option esthetically, but is also very resilient.

Most patio designs reflect an intimate personal atmosphere that is generally a product of its creators personality. And while a patios purpose and function may be included in the owners vision, the design, shape, and style are often a blank page.

While the first steps of creating a patio design are to determine its purposes and how it will be used as well as its location and amount of space allowed, materials, decor, entries, exits, and other hardscape options are so numerous that they can often be confusing. This happens to even the most inspired. See patio designs for a huge collection of patio pictures and designs that are sure to inspire some great ideas and possibly entire designs.

Regardless if concrete is decorative in the form of stamped, stained, engraved, or plain gray, it can often be the answer to maintenance or resource issues. If you need to create areas that are little care, areas that don’t require water, or both, consider adding more hardscapes like patios, driveways, or sidewalks to the plan. And while there are many elements such as pavers, flagstone, tile, or gravel that can be used as hardscape flooring, decorative concrete offers more design options than all of the others combined.

While not generally considered for preserving natural resources, the real green benefits of decorative concrete or other hardscape ground covers is often never even considered. Along with not needing water to sustain plants, there is also no need for herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. More than residential landscaping ideas, businesses and commercial landscaping could gain and save a lot from the practice of more hardscapes and concrete and less areas that need attention and care.

Adding some environmental responsibility to an existing front yard that is totally not green is often worth more than the time and effort put into it. First, if you’re planning to give your existing front yard a good clean up, the same principles of a new front yard landscape apply. Access and parking areas should be decided and then the rest of the landscape could easily be a matter of creating some planting beds around them. While the concrete, pavers, and hardscape will often make up a large portion of the landscaping, the sustainability and greenness will still need to be regulated in the use of plants, soils, and ground covers.

The first thing is to assess areas that are environmentally irresponsible. Generally a lot of lawn or at least the wrong type of grass are the majority of the problem. A secondary problem created by lawn areas is inefficient and broken sprinkler systems. Improperly built and adjusted sprinkler systems waste natural resources that would be better used in other areas of the landscaping or garden. So to eliminate both of these problems, the solution is usually to downsize or eliminate lawn areas altogether. And in downsizing the lawn areas, it’s often advisable to replant with drought tolerant turf types.

All geographically misplaced plants and shrubs should be replaced with plants, shrubs, and trees that are appropriate for the area and environment. For a fresher look in new and old front yard landscaping ideas, try using ornamental grasses in place of thirsty shrubs and hedges. Pruning trees and healthy shrubs will help keep them looking good and healthy which will also make them require less care, fertilizers, insecticides, and water.

To add a little color, interest, and cut down on planting areas, place some large planting containers on either side of your front steps or your walkway. Fill these with a combination of ornamental and colorful native or adaptive flowers. This will brighten your entryway and make it look very welcoming. Also, containers and planters are good for adding interest with plants throughout the different seasons.

As you add your plants to your front yard landscaping, remember that using less can sometimes be more. At first, don’t add too many plants into your front yard landscaping ideas and planting schemes. Repeat two or three regionally appropriate plant types and maybe a few evergreens throughout the landscaping making sure to group them according to water usage. This helps create unity and balance as well as well as cut down on water use.

Edging the driveways and sidewalks will do wonders for the yard making the whole property look sharp while also cutting down on planting areas. Make sure that your front steps, driveways, and walkways are clean and in good repair. Repair anything that needs it. Concrete, stone, or block walkways that have cracks or serious damage should be repaired or replaced.

If landscaping shapes and styles are too restricted and uninteresting, a few curved planting beds will help add a softer tone. Island planting beds are also a great addition that will add more interest to a front yard.

Consider installing some solar landscape lighting. These are so simple to be installed yourself and won’t cost you a cent in electricity. As well as creating safety lighting and saving you some money, they also add some class to the house and landscaping when it’s dark at night.

One more thing that is often overlooked. Take a look at what shape the house is in. Applying a fresh coat of paint, repairing windows, running gutters into rain barrels or cisterns, and fixing anything else in need of repair will do wonders for the home, front yard landscaping, and the environment.

A basic overhaul for a front yard landscape can be a simple project that is worth every bit of effort you put into it. If you find that your front yard is in need of a good clean up, the same principles of a new front yard landscape design apply. Entrance and parking areas should be placed so that the rest of the landscape could easily be a matter of placing some planting beds around them. Even a basic plan like this needs a little thought to help make the landscape beautiful. Here are a few ideas to help give your yard that edge.

First, assess the problem areas. Take a few pictures from different angles. Looking at the pictures might give you a better idea of what your front yard design really looks like. Make note of any changes that are needed. Write down even the small details. Are the concrete sidewalks cracked? Are any lawn areas overgrown with weeds? Has the entry lost its sense of invitation?

Remove all dead, dying, and unwanted shrubs. If you wish, you can replace them with new shrubs or for a fresher look in new and old front yard landscape design ideas, try planting decorative ornamental grasses in their place. Pruning shrubs and trees will help keep them looking good.

Add a little color, interest, and decoration with some large planting containers placed on the sides of your front steps or on either side of your walkway. Fill these with a combination of grasses, colorful flowers, or other potting plants. This will do a lot to make your front entry welcoming and inviting. Also, containers can add even more interest because you can change plants as the seasons change.

Keep it simple. Less is sometimes more. Don’t try to add too many plants and colors to your front yard landscaping. Pick two or three colors as well as a few evergreens and repeat them in the landscape. Doing so will add balance to the design.

Edging the walkways and any driveways will do wonders for the landscaping making the whole property look clean and detailed. See that any entry steps, driveways, or walks are clean and in good shape. Repair any stains, chips, or cracks that needs it. Concrete, stone, or block walkways that have cracks, chips, or breaks should be repaired or replaced altogether.

If your yard or landscaping style is too hard and boring, soften the look by adding a few curved flower beds. Island planting beds are also a great addition that will add more interest to a front yard.

You may want to think about adding some landscape lighting to the plan. These can generally be installed yourself or you can let a professional landscaper do the job. As well as creating safety lighting, they also add some class to the house and landscaping when it’s dark at night.

Don’t forget to fix up the home itself. Paint, repairing broken windows, and restoring anything else that needs repair will do a lot for the home as well as the front yard landscape.

Landscaping designs for front yards will focus on a whole different set of needs than designs developed for backyards. Front yard landscaping ideas will most often be designed around the necessary access points of the home. Also, the front yard is the first part of the property that visitors and friends will see so this usually creates their first impression of the home as well as the yard. Not usually designed for a lot of recreational use, the front yard is usually designed around the entryways and exits of the house. A lot of the time it’s possible to get a large portion of the front yard design by first designating where all the entryways, side walks, driveways, and other access areas will be and then simply designing the rest of the landscaping around them.

Planting ideas and schemes in front yards often place a lot of focus on the house and how it sits on the property. Just as the other elements like fences, walkways, and driveways, it’s important that the plants around the home also complement it. Trees, shrubs, and some plant groups can often create unity between the house and the landscaping by making the home seem a natural addition to the landscape.

The corners of the house and the entryway door are two areas that need special consideration when you’re creating your landscaping ideas and plans. The door is actually a focal point of the house and it’s often a good idea to place shorter plants on either side of it. The corners, on the other hand, should be planted with tall plants since they actually help soften the corners while also leading the eye toward the focal point of the front door.

Adding trees in front yard landscaping ideas is good also because trees can serve to frame the view of the home. They can place interest on the house making it the main feature of the property. Generally, you should plant trees with mature sizes similar to the scale of the house. Shade trees should be tall enough to shade and keep the home cool but not so tall that they dwarf the house. On the other side of the coin, planting shorter trees can make the house appear taller and possibly out of proportion as well.

Become familiar with different tree shapes and plant those that can match the closest with the design of the house. Houses with steep roofs will usually look best with pyramid shaped trees like Spruce and Birch. For ranch style homes, the horizontal or round maples and dogwoods are great choices.

Along with the plants and trees, lawn areas are also important in a lot of landscaping styles since they can create an excellent setting for the house. Front yards with an area of lawn surrounded by uncluttered planting beds and shrubs can create the illusion of being a bigger space than it really is. When planting shrubs, keep in mind that they may seem to be out of place if not planted in designated planting and flower beds.

The most important step in creating beautiful front yard landscaping ideas is to start with a complete and finished design. Even if you plan to do the project in steps over time, a complete plan is important to keep the project on track. Without it, you’ll end up with a patch work landscape that was obviously pieced together.Take the time to consider all we’ve learned in this article and create a finished plan first.

Front yard landscapes often place the main focus on creating an inviting entry while also accenting the view of the home. And creating the perfect front yard landscape can literally be as easy as placing the walks, driveways, and entryways and then designing the landscaping and planting schemes around them.

When looking for a landscaping contractor or any other construction contractor, It’s not a good idea to completely trust the word of any single source and especially the companies who provide a list of pre-screened and pre-qualified landscaping contractors. While they want you to believe they’ve checked everyone out with a fine tooth comb, they haven’t. And I know this first hand on several occasions.

I’ve been contacted a few times by phone by some of the larger contractor screening and broker companies. Without knowing anything about me or my company, they have all offered me leads if I would simple pay them for them. No screening, no qualification, no questions asked. Even if you simply trust their word, you could still end up burned.

While you may trust the brokers for initial leads and contacts, the rest is up to you. In my opinion, the brokers are only as good as the yellow pages and your local chamber of commerce. Regardless how you make contact, you have to do a little homework and protect you yourself.

Ask for references, a list of finished projects and pay attention to details and quality of the projects, check the BBB, check with your chamber of commerce, talk to their clients, talk to county agents, knock on a few doors, and most of all, trust your gut feeling when you meet the represenative of the company. While even all of this still isn’t a guarantee, it will put you a lot closer to finding a quality reputable landscaping company.

While green and sustainable living is becoming a familiar term these days, it has actually been practiced by certain groups for many years. It’s a way of life for organic gardeners and a lot of old school farmers. My granddad lived a sustainable lifestyle as a farmer because that’s just the way it was back then. Natural methods did a fine job of doing what all the harsh chemicals still can’t do today.

While most folks may not relate the two, Xeriscaping, often refered to as desert landscaping ideas, is a form of green or sustainable living. Xeriscaping principles are an efficient and conservative use of natural resources as well as natural control of insects, soil diseases, and weeds. And while the word “Xeriscaping” hasn’t been around all that long, the practice has been around for quite some time.

While it’s only a small part of living a green lifestyle, agriculture, gardening, and landscaping is what comes to the mind of most people when you mention the words green, sustainable, or environmentally responsible. And green gardening and landscaping ideas are becoming a necessary consideration of landscaping professionals because of it.

The “living green” movement is here to stay because the survival of this world depends on it. And while it may seem like a lot of trouble to some, it can actually make things easier and save you some money in the long run. And one of the easiest places to start is in your landscaping and gardening.
